Do you know what is the best day to book a flight?
This is the question we ask ourselves when we have to buy a plane ticket because, after all, all travellers like to believe that there is a “magic formula” or some “trick” that allows us to spend as little as possible!
One of the most popular myths on the Internet, but completely unfounded, suggests booking on a Tuesday… who knows why!
So let’s go back to the initial question: is there a better day to buy a ticket? Of course there is! Then I guess you want to know the answer. Listen, the best day to book is when you’re lucky and you come across an unmissable offer, because these can pop up at any time and on any day of the week.
The price of a ticket is determined by many factors, such as the launch of a new route, when we want to fly (whether high or low season) and complex commercial strategies that quickly adapt the supply of seats according to traveller demand.
While there is no best day to buy a ticket, we can follow a few simple rules to book a seat on a flight at the best price.
DEBUNKING A MYTH
It is not true that the earlier you book, the more you save. This may have been true years ago when low-cost airlines were trying to penetrate the market, but certainly not anymore.
According to the most recent studies, it is better to book a domestic flight 5 weeks in advance, a continental flight 9 to 10 weeks in advance and an intercontinental flight 5 to 6 months before the scheduled departure.
The average saving would be 9% on domestic flights, 11% on European flights and 4% for intercontinental flights.
WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO?
It seems trivial, but if the destination you are thinking of is very popular and everyone wants to go there, you can be sure that the price of tickets will tend to rise rapidly.
It’s the law of supply and demand!
BOOK IN THE AFTERNOON
It is better to book in the afternoon or in the evening. Prices are higher in the mornings, when most bookings are made by business travellers who have to travel for work and therefore pay less attention to ticket prices.
Airlines are aware of this and raise their prices during this time.
BOOK DURING THE WEEK
It is once again the law of supply and demand.
During the weekend, when we are all more relaxed, flight searches increase and airlines raise their prices.
So…if you’re looking for a flight, best to book Monday to Friday.
JANUARY AND SEPTEMBER ARE THE BEST MONTHS
Why are these the best months to book? Because the Christmas and summer holidays have just ended, the number of people travelling as tourists decreases and so does the demand for airline tickets.
You can find the best deals during these months because airlines offer very cheap fares to entice people to travel.
If possible, always try to book in the low season when there are fewer passengers and the chances of finding an offer increase.
CHOOSE NEW ROUTES
If you don’t have a specific destination in mind, take advantage of the new routes that are periodically launched by airlines.
When airlines add a connection to a new destination, they try to make the route very attractive to travellers by offering tickets at heavily discounted prices.
A tip is therefore to be flexible with the destinations, take advantage of the new offer and … take off for a country you never thought of.
DO NOT BUY YOUR TICKET SHORTLY BEFORE DEPARTURE
It seems obvious, but sometimes the idea of waiting a little longer to see if prices fall or if a better offer can be found can produce the opposite result to the one desired.
If we have to book a flight, we are unlikely to find a good price a few days before departure because by then most of the available seats have already been sold out and those who buy tickets on these dates are only doing so out of necessity.
In these cases it is highly unlikely that an airline will offer discounts.
FIND OUT IF THE FLIGHT IS FULL
If a flight has sold almost all of its tickets, it is unlikely that prices will come down.
Give it a try! Enter a purchase order for a high number of tickets. If the system lets you book, it means that there are still many seats available and therefore the prices might go down!
USE A META SEARCH ENGINE
It seems trivial, but different booking sites may offer different fares. Also, the same route may be covered by several airlines. If you are looking for the best price, the ideal solution would be to use a meta search engine such as blimm to compare all offers in one search.
As you may have guessed, there’s no such thing as a better day or a particular trick to paying less for your flight ticket, so if you want to try and save money, try following the tips we’ve given you and with a bit of luck you’ll be able to travel at a great price.
